VIŠNJA SLAVICA GABOUT, prof.
povjesničarka umjetnosti, likovna kritičarka i novinarka

Rođena 1954. u Sisku. Diplomirala na Filozofskom fakultetu Sveučilišta u Zagrebu 1977. godine povijest umjetnosti i engleski jezik. Na hrvatskoj likovnoj sceni djeluje kao likovna kritičarka, kustosica i novinarka već gotovo četiri desetljeća. Stručne tekstove, recenzije i osvrte s područja likovnih umjetnosti objavljuje još od početka osamdesetih godina 20.st. u dnevnim, tjednim i periodičnim novinama i časopisima (Večernji list, Oko, Vjesnik, 15 dana, Novi list, Hrvatsko slovo) te u specijaliziranim publikacijama za kulturu i umjetnost (Epoha, Grafika, Kontura). Surađivala je 10 godina na Hrvatskoj televiziji, u redakcijama Dokumentarnog programa i Kulture. Publicirano joj je nekoliko monografskih izdanja i stručnih studija o umjetnicima – slikarima, grafičarima i fotografima, zatim teoretičarskih knjiga („Keramika i suvremena umjetnost“, 2016.) te recenzija u pjesničko-grafičkim mapama (grafike Nevenke Arbanas, Maje S.Franković, Zdenke Pozaić). Autorica je, selektorica i kustosica brojnih samostalnih i skupnih izložbi te nacionalnih i međunarodnih projekata, kao napr.:

Predsjednica je Umjetničkog savjeta Hrvatske udruge likovnih umjetnika primijenjenih umjetnosti (ULUPUH) i Umjetničkog savjeta Photo Art Gallery Centra vizualnih umjetnosti (CVU) Batana Rovinj-Rovigno, te članica umjetničkih savjeta Hrvatskog udruženja likovnih umjetnika (HULU) Split, Multimedijalnog centra (MMC) galerije POU Ante Babić Umag, kao i programska suradnica Galerije Decumanus, Krk. Od 2007. do 2009. bila je članica komisije za dodjelu nacionalne Nagrade Vladimir Nazor pri Ministarstvu kulture RH, a već u nekoliko mandata obnaša dužnost članice stručnog povjerenstva za primijenjene umjetnike pri Hrvatskoj zajednici samostalnih umjetnika (HZSU).

Profilirala se kao likovna kritičarka za vizualne umjetnosti suvremenog izričaja, baveći se ponajviše istraživanjima u području suvremene keramike i primijenjene fotografije. Posebno je u području suvremene keramike ostvarila, unazad nešto više od deset godina, niz zapaženih autorskih istraživačkih projekata, koje je realizirala s većim brojem znanih hrvatskih, ali i pozvanih inozemnih suvremenih keramičara, u Hrvatskoj i u inozemstvu:
- „Keramička ploča, polje asocijacije, naracije i akcije“ (2007., Zagreb-Rijeka)
- „Zvuk, svjetlo, pokret – i keramika kao koncept“ (2008., Zagreb)

Za neke od navedenih projekata bila je od struke i nagrađena.
Od 1993. do 2003. bila je voditeljica dviju ULUPUH-ovih galerija: Galerije ULUPUH i Galerije Permanenta. Od 2000. do 2007. vodila je Galeriju sv.Nikole u Malinskoj, a od 2005. do 2012. Galeriju crkvice sv. Trojice u Kastvu. Godine 2007. bila je članica Organizacijskog odbora „42. zagrebačkog salona – vizualne umjetnosti“, godine 2011. članica žirija Međunarodnog „Ex tempore keramike“ u Piranu, a godine 2017. jedan od izbornika hrvatskih autora koji izlažu u projektu „Keramos“, u sklopu međunarodnog trijenala keramike UNICUM u Piranu. Godine 2014. bila je autorica koncepcije, selektorica i kustosica „49. zagrebačkog salona – primijenjene umjetnosti“, za što je nagrađena Godišnjom nagradom ULUPUH-a, a 2017. bila je članica žirija „52. zagrebačkog salona – primijenjene umjetnosti“. Za svoj rad nekoliko puta je nagrađena Godišnjom nagradom ULUPUH-a pod pokroviteljstvom Skupštine grada Zagreba, za najbolju izložbu i projekt: 2007., 2011., 2014., 2015. i 2016. Isto tako, od ULUPUH-a je nekoliko puta nominirana i za Nagradu Grada Zagreba.

Sudjelovala je na mnogim međunarodnim simpozijima i bila na umjetničkim rezidencijama (Njemačka, Slovenija, Italija, Austrija, Mađarska, Švicarska, Bugarska, Bosna i Hercegovina, Francuska/Paris – tri puta na rezidenciji u Cité International des Arts,). Studijski je proputovala kroz većinu europskih zemalja.

Članica je ULUPUH-a (Studijska sekcija) od 1989., HULU Split (Kustoski tim) od 2015., Hrvatskog novinarskog društva od 1997., Društva povjesničara umjetnosti Hrvatske, Kerameikona – Hrvatskog keramičarskog udruženja i Hrvatskog društva znanstvenih i tehničkih prevoditelja. Živi u Zagrebu.

Art historian, art critic and journalist

Višnja Slavica Gabout was born in 1954 in Sisak, Croatia. She graduated history of art and English from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Zagreb University (Croatia) in 1977. She has been active on the Croatian arts scene as critic, curator and journalist for almost four decades. She has published specialised texts, reviews and notices from the domain of the fine arts continuously since the early 1980s, in the dailies, weeklies and in periodicals (Večernji list, Oko, Vjesnik, 15 dana, Novi list, Hrvatsko slovo ), as well as in specialised publications for culture and art (Epoha, Grafika, Kontura). For 10 years she has worked on Croatian Television, in the editorial offices of the documentary programme and culture. She has had a number of monographs and specialised studies about visual, graphic and photograph artists published, together with theoretical books (Ceramics and Contemporary Art, 2016) and reviews in albums of poetry and graphic art (with contemporary printmaking artists Nevenka Arbanas, Maja S.Franković, Zdenka Pozaić ... ). She has created, selected an curated numerous solo and collective exhibitions, as well as national and international projects, for example:

She is the president of the Art Council of Croatian Association of Artists of Applied Arts (ULUPUH) and the Art Council of Batana Photo Art Gallery in Rovinj, as well as a member of the Art Council of Croatian Association of Visual Artists (HULU Split), the Multimedial center (MMC) Gallery of the Ante Babić Open University of Umag, as well as a programme associate of the Decumanus Gallery in Krk (island Krk). From 2007 to 2009 she was a member of the commission for the award of the Vladimir Nazor National Croatian Prize, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, and has for several terms carried out the duties of member of the expert commission for applied artists at the Croatian Freelance Artists Association.

She has developed a reputation for being an art critic for visual arts in the contemporary idiom, particularly for contemporary applied art, with a special emphasis on contemporary ceramics and photography. In this area she has in the last ten years or so put on a number of well regarded researh art projects, of which are the most prized those of contemporary ceramics, realized in Croatia and abroad, with well-known Croatian, but also with some international ceramists:

From 1993 to 2003 she was the manager of two ULUPUH galieries in Zagreb: the ULUPUH Gallery and the Permanenta Gallery. From 2000 to 2007 she was the manager of the St Nicholas Gallery in Malinska (island Krk), and from 2005 to 2007 manager of the Holy Trinity Chapel Gallery in Kastav, near Rijeka. In 2007 she was a member of the Organisation comittee of the „42 Zagreb Salon – Visual arts“, and in 2011 she was a member of the Selection jury of the “International Ex Tempore Ceramics Exhibition“ in Piran (Slovenia). In 2017 she was one of the selectors of Croatian artists exhibiting at UNICUM, the International ceramics triennial in Piran (Slovenia). In 2014 she devised, selected and curated the “49 Zagreb Salon - Applied Arts“, for which she was awarded with professional annual prize, and in 2017 she was a member of the Selection jury of the “52 Zagreb Salon – Applied arts“. She has been many times awarded for her work with national professional annual prizes, mostly for the best ceramics exhibition projects : in 2007, 2011, 2014, 2015 and 2016 and all the prizes were sponsored by the City of Zagreb Assembly. Also, she has been several times nominated by her professional association for the Zagreb City Prize.

She has taken part at a series of international art simposia and art residences (Germany, Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina France/Paris - three times resident in Cité International des Arts,). She took many study trips around most of Europe countries.

Višnja Slavica Gabout is a member of the Croatian Association of Artists of Applied Arts – ULUPUH/Study section (from 1989), the Croatian Association of Visual Artists - HULU Split/Curatorial team (from 2015) , the Croatian Journalists Association (from 1997), the Croatian Ceramic Association - Kerameikon, the Association of Art Historians of Croatia and the Croatian Association of Scientific and Technical Translators. She lives in Zagreb.
